Bull Street Taco Redesign

This is a mock project for an advertising illustration class where I had to create an illustration for the restaurant's menu and placemat. But because branding is something I am passionate about I decided to create something more versatile that can be used throughout the restaurant's overall branding. I also modified their logo.

REsearching the brand

I start by researching about the brand's mission and vision as well as their aesthetic and theme. As part of my research I also visited the restaurant to get a better idea of the ambience and mood.

Current branding

I explored the restaurant's socials and webpage to get an idea of their current theme and branding. I also managed to find their current menu designs. Based on my research the restaurant has a funky and casual personality that does not really reflect in their branding. I think adding characters and illustrations can elevate that.

Moodboard

The restaurant had lots of Californian themed decor that feels retro. So I drew a lot of inspiration from the 70s specifically from Venice Beach.

Thumbnailing

Using all the information I've gathered I sketched out 20 thumbnails for their placemat. Thinking of both exploring characters and as composition.

Black and white comps

Planning out where each illustration can be used and composed in different elements throughout the restaurant's branding.

Refining characters and icons

Here I refined each character and icons and essentially created a "lineup". I made sure each illustration was cohesive and fit the theme and was versatile enough to mix and match.

Final branding

I narrowed down a color palette and refined their logo to make it more cohesive. The illustrations can be made into a placemat, menu icons, and even on their website. The illustrations are also purposely made as line drawings so that kids can interact and color as a part of the restaurant experience (especially, the kids' menu)
